As everyone else, we were surprised at the speed in which COVID-19 changed our lives. We closed our doors on 17th March believing we would all be together again in a matter of weeks. Very quickly it became clear this would not be the case and so we had to work out how to do what we do from behind the closed doors.
Our new cook Jenny joined us and, with the help of some of our existing volunteers and some lovely folk who joined us from Chapelcross, we were able to start delivering meals. Within no time at all we were delivering up to 80 meals a day, two days per week. Three of our Trustees took up the mantle and developed our telephone befriending service making approximately 40 calls per week. Our support staff provided support via telephone too.
In three months we:
- Received 99 referrals from other agencies
- Engaged with 47 new clients
- Gave out 146 food parcels
- Provided 841 telephone befriending and support sessions
- Delivered 1,868 meals in Annan, Lockerbie and surrounding areas.
Once we had our meal delivery and befriending services up and running we were able to provide tools to improve mental health and wellbeing such as rock painting kits and bunting kits to allow participants to celebrate the Annan Riding of the Marches and did our bit to brighten the days! Tik Tok Dance.
As things are changing and progressing we are still providing support, a lot more ‘in house’ as we are now able to provide support on an appointment basis and adhering to COVID-19 guidelines. We also have a small volunteer group working away on sorting the back garden and are pleased to have a local primary school having a design competition for our porta cabin which was donated by Ashleigh Construction during lockdown for the Garden Club to use on on their return.
